How to use this tool

  1. Enter the width and height of the reference photo in pixels.

  2. Measure the usable area of the paper in centimeters and choose how many squares to put along the longer photo edge.

  3. Set the reference grid to the pixel spacing shown. Measure the listed lines on the paper, then copy details from the corresponding cells.

Position the first grid line

The first and last marks give the drawing border. On a 30 × 24 cm sheet a 1200 × 800 photo fits inside a 30 × 20 cm rectangle. Its top border is 2 cm down the sheet. Measure every horizontal line from the same top edge to avoid accumulating ruler errors.

Use the short edge cell

With eight squares along the longer edge of that photo, each full square is 150 px wide on screen and 3.75 cm wide on paper. The bottom strip is 50 px tall in the photo and 1.25 cm tall on paper. Use that strip for the last part of the image.

Common questions

Which dimensions should I use after cropping?

Use the pixel width and height of the cropped reference. The first grid line on the photo starts at its top-left corner.

How do I keep a border for framing?

Subtract the border on both sides of each paper dimension before entering it. Take the ruler measurements from the top-left corner of that usable rectangle.
